TENNIS : ANDY MURRAY WINS SHANGHAI MASTERS ; CLOSES IN ON NOVAK DJOKOVIC AS WORLD NUMBER 1 !
World No. 2 Andy Murray is now within striking distance of toppling Novak Djokovic and put an end to The Djoker's dominant, long-running reign as World No. 1.Tweet
But Murray wouldn't have a walk in the park to do that. Though only about 915 points now separate the two warriors, Djokovic certainly wouldn't give up his throne, without a fight!
Murray closes in the gap, as he won the Shanghai Rolex Masters Sunday, dismissing World No. 19 Roberto Bautista Agut in an emphatic fashion, 7-6, 6-1.
Though the First Set went to a Tie Break, Murray's dominance became clear as he eased to clinch the Title - now his third, having won the tournament in 2010 and 2011.
Djokovic came short of facing Murray in the Finals, as he was eliminated Saturday in the Semis by Agut, 6-4, 6-4.
Murray, the 2016 Rio Olympics Gold Medalist, and 2016 Wimbledon Champion, is having a career high of his life.
"I've never had success like I've had in past few months of my career," declared the 3-Time Grand Slam Champion.
"I believe I can get to No.1," he said.
With Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal seemingly out of the Big Four, it's now narrowed down between Murray and Djokovic.
Though Stan Wawrinka is also just a breath behind, not too far from the two.
Djokovic, with 12 Grand Slam wins under his belt, is not showing any sign of slowing down at 29.
Murray must have a determination of steel to get past The Djoker.
Losing in the Australian Open Finals for an unbelievable 5 times - 4 of which to Djokovic - would certainly toughen the toughest in him.
Andy Murray's year just keeps getting better.
