Serena Williams, rather unwittingly, had left Maria Sharapova hanging up to the last minute, before announcing she is not turning up for their much-talked-about feud match - - on the 11th hour.
Minutes before both players were due to walk on court in front of a capacity crowd at the French Open, Serena Williams took to the media room and announced she had an injury during her previous match, rendering her "physically" unable to serve, thus cannot make it to the court to face Sharapova.
"I am beyond disappointed," declared Williams, 23-Time Grand Slam Champion, saying she "gave up so much and put everything on court all for the moment".

Unfortunately, all for nought.
Maria Sharapova, who is now gifted with a free walkover to the Quarter-Finals with Serena's withdrawal from the French Open, expressed disappointment, as well.
“I was looking forward to my match against Serena today and am disappointed that she had to withdraw. I wish her a speedy recovery and hope she returns to the tour soon,” stated the 5-Time Grand Slam Champion.
Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova are longtime rivals, seemingly locked in what could be one of the longest-running feuds in sports.
In 2004, the two had a bitter encounter in the Championship Finals at Wimbledon.
Serena Williams, two-time Wimbledon Defending Champion at the time, was sensationally dethroned by Maria Sharapova who later revealed in her autobiography released in 2017, she heard Serena "gutturally sobbing" inside the locker room following her defeat.
Sharapova wrote, Serena Williams "hated her for being the skinny kid who beat her".
Sharapova was 17 then, bagging her first Grand Slam crown, while Serena was about to turn 23.
Some 14 years later, the feud seems to have not subsided a bit, at all.
In Paris, just about 48 hours before her shock withdrawal from the French Open Monday, Serena Williams had a cool but sharp dig at Maria Sharapova's book, calling it "100% hearsay".
