DAVIS CUP : JUAN MARTIN DEL POTRO PULLS OFF DO-OR-DIE COMEBACK ; PAVES WAY FOR FIRST-EVER ARGENTINA DAVIS CUP CROWN IN 116 YEARS !
Crotia was on the verge of victory.Tweet
Just a few breaths from glory.
The whole nation, with its President cheering inside the arena, was all ready to celebrate.
Argentina was ready to cry.
With 1-2 down in the Davis Cup Final Team Tally , and Juan Martin Del Potro, their national hero, staring defeat at 0-2 down against Croatia's own national icon Marin Cilic in their Singles duel rubber, Argentina was on the brink of yet another painfully devastating loss -- their record 5th, it would be.
Marin Cilic was just 2 Games away from clinching victory against Del Potro, and the Davis Cup Final will be over.
Crotia will be the World Champions.
But then, the unthinkable happened.
From 0-2 down, Juan Martin Del Potro miraculously pulled off one of the greatest comebacks in tennis, and defeated Cilic, from 0-2 down, to 3-1!
Cilic, already smelled victory, didn't know what hit him.
Del Potro's incredible 'do-or-die' win leveled the Davis Cup Final Team Score to an equal 2-2.
By the skin of their teeth, Argentina survives.
Like a 'last seconds' helpline from heaven, Del Potro's win paved the way for the final face-off -- the decider. The decider that many thought was no longer gonna happen.
Croatia's Ivo Karlovic vs. Argentina's Federico Delbonis.
Singles duel.
The winner takes all.
The winner, his country will be World Champions.
And, like a valiant knight, the weight of his whole nation on his shoulders, Federico Delbonis -- the clear underdog vis-a-vis Karlovic -- delivered the best performance of his life, fought like there is no tomorrow.
He mercilessly slayed the big serving giant in 3 straight Sets!
Karlovic, the world's number 1 in aces -- a whopping 11,572 total aces in his career -- just didn't stand the Argentine's ferocious onslaught.
Delbonis prevailed 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 .
His astonishing win brings the Davis Cup Final Team Tally to 3-2.
Argentina 3 - Croatia 2.
Seemingly in a blink of an eye, in a sudden reversal of fortune, Argentina are the World Champions!
For the very first time, in 116 years!
Diego Maradona looks the happiest man on Earth!
