TENNIS : STAN WAWRINKA DEMOLISHES NOVAK DJOKOVIC; WINS US OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP !
"The Thinking Man" Outwits "Djoker"! - - Stan Wawrinka, demolishes World No.1 Novak Djokovic in their US Open Finals duel, to snatch the 2016 Championship Title!Tweet
Djokovic, who had the easiest way to the Championship Finals - the easiest in any Grand Slam - did not go down without fighting - and more. He called for two medical time-outs in the crucial Games in the 4th Set - which turned out to be his last stand in the decisive last Set - apparently to derail Wawrinka's rhythm serving, but to no avail.
Wawrinka, ranked World No.3, pounced the Defending Champion with relentless, lethal one-handed backhand winners and witty shot-making to take the Championship Match in 4 thrilling Sets (6-7, 6-4, 7-5, 6-3). Djokovic took the first Set through a clear-cut Tie Break. Wawrinka, however, bounced back and took the second, third, and fourth Sets in a row - giving "DJoker" absolutely no space and time to joke.
Though the Games all through out the match had been so tight and intense, often locked in sticky deuces, with only a ball or two defining victory and loss between the two warriors, Wawrinka clearly dictated much of the tempo, changing rally shot directions, and pulling the trigger, at will on big points.
It took 2 Championship Points for Wawrinka to close out the match, the second sealing his victory. Wawrinka goes home with the Championship Trophy, and a $3.5 Million Dollar prize!
Djokovic, he had the easiest route to the Championship Finals, playing only 4 proper matches out of 7 - the Final Match included. His opponents retired in the Second Round, again in the Third Round, and again in the Quarter Finals. He only faced one serious threat before the Finals - Gael Monfils in the Semis. Well, not that serious, actually.
Compare that - to Wawrinka, who faced veteran Fernando Verdasco, dangerous Daniel Evans, and big name slayers Juan Martin del Potro and Kei Nishikori en route to the Championship Finals.
"I am absolutely empty!" declared Wawrinka after the match, visibly exhausted over his two weeks of toe-to-toe battle of tennis. His signature pose of a forefinger pointing to the temple, earned him our fitting tag "The Thinking Man" (The Wise Man, eh?).
Djokovic, on the other hand, had his fair big share of a grueling season, having won the Australian Open, and the French Open this year.
Head-to-head, Djokovic still has the big edge by far, but Wawrinka has now defeated him in three big Grand Slam matches - Quarter Finals duel at the 2014 Australian Open (where Wawrinka went on to become the Champion; Championship battle at the 2015 French Open (Wawrinka also the Champion); and now the 2016 US Open Championship (where Wawrinka again emerged as the Champion!).
In a time where Djokovic reigns supreme in tennis, is Wawrinka really his unwanted Waterloo?
