FOOTBALL : ANTOINE GRIEZMANN TAKES LA LIGA BEST PLAYER AWARD ; BARCELONA STARS BOYCOTT AWARDS NIGHT !
Football Legends Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have been upstaged by Antoine Griezmann at the La Liga Awards as he snatched the top award Best Player - for the first time.Tweet
The awards night belonged to Atletico Madrid, winning four out of six major awards.
Antoine Griezmann who plays for Atletico has scored 22 goals in 38 La Liga games last season.
But celebrations in the air is not quite ripe, as Barcelona stars snubbed the Awards Ceremony, in protest of having their coach, Luis Enrique, lost in the Best Coach award. Enrique was not even nominated.
As if adding insult to injury for Barcelona, the Best Coach award went to Diego Simeone, instead - also of Atletico.
And, it didn't stop there.
The Best Defender award went to Diego Godin, while the Best Goalkeeper went to Jan Oblak - also both of Atletico.
Real Madrid and Barcelona managed to take home one each out of the six major awards.
Best Midfielder was Luka Modric of Real Madrid and Best Forward was Lionel Messi of Barcelona.
Lionel Messi had been dominating the La Liga Awards for years since its inception in 2008, having been named the Best Player for an incredible six times out of eight years, and had been awarded Best Forward seven times, out of eight years.
Cristiano Ronaldo managed to interrupt Messi's long undisturbed reign only in 2014 - grabbing the Best Player and Best Forward awards only for that year.
