FOOTBALL : CHED EVANS FOUND NOT GUILTY IN RAPE RETRIAL !
Welsh Footballer Ched Evans had been found not guilty of raping a 19-year old woman, he and his friends had met during a drunken night out in May 2011.Tweet
The woman cried rape, claiming her drinks at the pub were spiked, and later woke up in bed in a hotel room the following morning, naked.
Two men, both of them footballers, were charged of rape, stemming from the incident - Ched Evans and and his friend Clayton McDonald.
Evans denied the accusation, saying the woman allowed him to "join in" while she was having consensual sex with McDonald.
Ched Evans was initially found guilty as charged in April 2012, and was sentenced to 5 years in prison. While his co-accused Clayton McDonald, was acquitted.
The case has become a heated controversy far beyond the pitch of football.
Ched Evan's conviction, however, was quashed in April 2016.
He was later found not guilty of the same charge Friday following a two-week retrial. The verdict read out loud amidst gasps and cries from the public.
Evans, who had played for Wales and Sheffield United, expressed overwhelming relief with the outcome, thru a statement read by his attorney.
He has spent two and a half years in prison, before his acquittal in court.
Reports say, he may have lost millions of British Pounds in professional income, due to his case.
While Evans' friends and supporters may be relieved by his vindication, some women's groups are not happy about it - at all.
They say the legal defense tactic that was used - and allowed - in court was a "dangerous" precedent for women.
Two other men were allowed to testify in court, and revealed how they had consensual sex with the woman just days before and after the alleged "rape" incident by Evans took place.
They described in details her sexual fantasies and behavior in bed, casting doubts on her credibility.
On both occasions, the woman was heavily drunk, they said separately.
Each time she woke up in bed, she claimed she had no memory of what had happened.
Evans was signed by Chesterfield in June 2016, following his appeal.
Chesterfield Chief Executive Chris Turner welcomed Evan's eventual acquittal.
"We are naturally delighted with the outcome, especially for Ched, his family and friends. We can now all move forward and focus on football." he said.
