TENNIS : MARIA SHARAPOVA KNOCKS OUT WORLD NO.2 SIMONA HALEP IN US OPEN FIRST ROUND EPIC AFTER A NASTY BATHROOM BREAK !
Maria Sharapova's wild card at the US Open is . . . well, wild, after all.
In what could be the most epic First Round battle in all of Grand Slams, Maria Sharapova trounced World No. 2 Simona Halep to make her dramatic return to Grand Slam tennis - - with a stomp.
Sharapova, in tears, going down to her knees following her victory, defeats Halep 6-4; 4-6; 6-3 in a breathtaking duel before a sell-out capacity crowd that lasted almost 3 hours - - the First Set lasted an hour, and the Second, nearly an hour.

It is Sharapova's first appearance and first win in a Grand Slam after her 15-month ban for doping.

Sharapova, already controversial for her doping scandal, did not win over Halep without adding a bit more of that - - controversy.
She called for a nasty bathroom break after her loss in the Second Set, derailing Simona Halep's momentum and rhythm before the Third Set decider.
After her bathroom break, Sharapova came back stronger and took the Third Set convincingly, clinching her victory.
Maria Sharapova tested positive with an illegal substance, called Meldonium, at the Australian Open in January 2016.
She was banned for 2 years, but subsequently reduced to 15 months, following her appeal.
Sharapova later admitted taking this drug for at least ten years.
