TENNIS : SERENA WILLIAMS TO MAKE HISTORIC COMEBACK BARELY 4 MONTHS AFTER BABY BIRTH ; BECOMES FIRST WOMAN TO PLAY AT ABU DHABI'S WORLD TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP !
Queen Of Tennis Serena Williams @SerenaWilliams is set to make a little bit more of history when she returns to tennis this week.Tweet
Barely four months after giving birth to her first baby in September, 23-Time Grand Slam Champion Serena will see action in Abu Dhabi, December 30.
She becomes the first woman, alongside with 2017 French Open Champion and new Tennis Sensation Jelena Ostapenko @OstapenkoJ1997, to play at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship.
Serena Williams won the 2017 Australian Open in January - - her 23rd Grand Slam Crown - - while eight weeks pregnant, battling her way through the entire tournament, under the blistering Australian summer heat on the hard court.
She later said on USTA @USTA, her baby must be a girl, as she never complained or never gave her any trouble despite the punishing weather.
"Ride or die. Women are tough", she said.
Serena Williams, 36, who has been a towering symbol of women's power - - on and off the court - - throughout her career, now steps into the tennis court, also for the first time, as a mom.
Her baby daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr., is a Junior named after her father, Alexis Ohanian @AlexisOhanian - - Serena's husband.
Juniors are traditionally for sons, not daughters.
Abu Dhabi's Mubadala World Tennis Championship has been an all-male tennis event since its inception in 2009, until two women named Serena Williams and Jelena Ostapenko set foot on the ground.
Arab countries, like Abu Dhabi, are predominantly patriarchal, by and large, with women's rights and roles historically a stubborn and nagging social issue.
But times are changing, albeit slow, apparently.
Neighbouring Saudi Arabia, for instance, just recently allowed women to drive cars.
And now, Abu Dhabi welcomes the first ever women to play at its World Tennis Championship.
Not a bad task at all, for a comeback, after a daunting 11-month maternity off, eh Serena?
