FOOTBALL : GREEK SUPER LEAGUE IN TURMOIL AFTER PAOK CLUB OWNER INVADED PITCH DURING MATCH - - WITH A GUN !
Greek football just hit the headlines overnight around the world, for all the very wrong reasons.Tweet
A football club owner - - one of the richest men in Greece - - invaded the pitch with a handgun on his waist, confronted the referee with his bodyguards, after the ref disallowed a goal by his team in the very last minute of the match.
The Prime Minister of Greece, after meeting with the Greek Deputy Sports Minister, ordered all matches of Greece's Super League suspended indefinitely as a result of the bizarre incident.
Ivan Savvidis, owner of PAOK FC - - one of the biggest football clubs in Greece - - was armed with what appeared to be a revolver handgun on his his waist when he angrily stormed the football field on the 89th minute of the match between title rivals PAOK FC and AEK Athens FC to confront the referee after the latter ruled a last-minute goal by PAOK, offside.
Players of the opposing side AEK Athens left the pitch for fear for their safety, the match officially abandoned a draw, PAOK 0-0 AEK.
But some two hours later, the goal was eventually awarded to PAOK FC, officially winning the match - - leaving AEK furiously outraged.
FIFA and UEFA - - World and European governing body of football, respectively - - both condemned the incident.
Greek Super League is the highest professional football league in Greece.
Ivan Savvidis, who is among the wealthiest and most influential businessmen in Greece and Russia, was born in Georgia of Greek-Russian descent, and was a member of the Russian Parliament.
Savvidis is said to have close links with Russian strongman Vladimir Putin.
