Historic moments unfold in the Korean Peninsula, as the world witnesses what could be the dawn of a new era that promises the long-elusive peace, which generations had sought - - and failed - - for nearly 70 years.

North Korean Dictator Kim Jong-Un has today dramatically crossed the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) to set foot on South Korean soil for the very first time, extending his hands of peace and reconciliation to South Korea - - its long-lost brother, turned long-time neighbour and bitter enemy - - after decades of war, ideological dispute, and destruction.

"A new history begins today", declared Kim Jong-Un as he is welcomed by South Korean President Moon Jae-in at the DMZ - - the most heavily armed and guarded border in the world - - which has become the iconic symbol of separation, animosity and bitter division of the two Koreas.

"The DMZ is no longer a symbol of division, but now a symbol of peace", later said President Moon as he sat down with Kim Jong-Un to talk peace.

Kim Jong-Un - - who inherited power from his father and grandfather as dictator of North Korea - - has increasingly threatened the region, and the world, with his growing nuclear firepower.

Tension between North Korea and the US reached boiling point recently, with an apocalyptic nuclear war seemed looming.

Kim Jong-Un traded insults, threats, and fiery words with US President Donald Trump as the world on edge watched in horror.

But suddenly, with seemingly a complete reversal of fortune, Kim Jong-Un is now talking peace.

Donald Trump and Kim Jong-Un are set to meet face-to-face also in a historic first, some time next month, reports say.

History weighs heavy over the April 27 meeting between North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un, the grandson of #NorthKorea’s founder, and South Korean President Moon Jae-in, the child of refugees who fled the North during the 1950-53 Korean War. The setting is also significant: the demilitarized zone, or DMZ, is a narrow strip of land that has separated the two nations since that #ColdWar conflict ended in a prickly stalemate. Kim made history on April 27 by stepping over the world’s most heavily armed border to greet Moon; he invited Moon to cross briefly into the north before they returned to the southern side. On one level, this is a summit between two leaders striving to fulfill their forebears’ legacies: Kim’s mission to safeguard his dynastic regime; Moon’s to reunite the riven peninsula.
