South American Cup Champions, declares CONMEBOL -- football's governing body in South America.
Chapecoense, the Brazilian football team that was on its historic course of writing a Cinderella success story -- but was rather shattered by tragedy -- had been officially awarded the the Copa Sudamericana Cup, as Champions.
Team Atletico Nacional of Medellin in Colombia, Chapecoense's supposed opponent in the Cup Finals, had earlier requested CONMEBOL to award the Championship Cup to Chapecoense.
What a powerful, moving tribute, indeed.
Chapecoense was almost entirely wiped out, when their charter plane crashed en route to the Cup Finals in Medellin, Colombia, on November 28.
Medellin was the host of the first leg of the Cup Finals.
Just days before the tragedy, Chapecoense and its whole city of Chapeco, were extremely overjoyed after they had won in the Semi-Finals, and was to go through the Championship Finals. Rising from the bottom to the top, it was the most glorious moment in their history.
On their way to the Finals, the whole contingent was ecstatic inside the plane, some even playfully Instagramming shortly before the crash.
Little did they know, it was the final few moments of their lives.
Of the 77 people on board, 71 were killed, including 20 journalists.
Chapecoense lost 19 of its players -- and its coach.
Instead of celebrating a victorious conquest, Chapeco bleeds from its soul, mourning the loss of its befallen warriors.
The whole world of football reels in shock, shaken by the tragedy.
Days after the fateful crash, the skies of Brazil were crying as the nation welcomes home the bodies of their fallen heroes, amidst rains and tears. The President of Brazil leads plane-side military honors as the caskets -- draped in Chapecoense's white and green -- were slowly marched in.
Tributes come from around the world. Football,and beyond.
Without doubt, the tragic -- yet amazing -- story of Chapecoense will forever be engraved in history.
